3D (Paper - Booklet design and Graphics) Michael Franti biography

This is a model of a biography I designed to be given out or sold cheaply at the Power to the Peaceful festival in San Francisco. It celebrates the founder Michael Franti and his life's work.

There are two features to this design. The first is fold out pages which open into a Power to the Peaceful banner.

The second is the 'hypertab' system which I created to replicate in book format the hypertext/hyperlink systems available on the net. After reading through Franti's life I found there were three main areas that he had worked with; music, politics and video. But as I went on I found the three constantly crossing over such as in his music videos, the politics involved in his FranTV shorts and so on. So I wanted the reader to be able to immediately access these cross-over points.
This method allows the reader greater access to whichever information they specifically require instead of them having to read start to finish to find it. It gives the book a multi-linear read.
So in the same way that tabs represent the chapters of the book, I also added miniature tabs 'Hypertabs' to represent where content from one chapter related to a diffrent chapter.

So by first dividing Franti's work into three categories, each with its own tab and page colour. I then picked through the work and gave each cross-over within a chapter its own hypertab with the colour of the chapter it related to.
The location of the hypertabs on each page edge was supposed to follow the example of ordinary tabs, running in one diagonal line down the side of the book and never overlapping. This was impossible in this instance because occasionally there were two links to a page instead of just the usual one you have with regular tabs. This caused an overlap in tabs making it user-unfriendly. To get over this I gave the hypertabs two diagonal lines which allowed two links per page (but only two links per page, if there were to be three I'd have to add another diagonal)
